Isabel (Michelle Williams) has dedicated her entire life to running an orphanage in the Calcutta slum. As the funds run out, a potential financier appears but requires Isabel to travel to New York. Reluctantly, he returns to a city that has been avoided for more than two decades.

In New York, Isabel meets her potential benefactor, Theresa Young (Julianne Moore). A media mogul and a multimillionaire who is used to getting his way. She has a cool office and a luxury home where she lives with her artist husband (Billy Crudup), daughter Grace (Abby Quinn) and their twin sons. However, a life that looks perfect is just a surface, and Isabel and Theresa have more in common than one might think at first glance.

Isabel believes she can return to her beloved orphanage soon, but Theresa has other plans. She calls on Isabel to attend Grace's wedding. The happy event serves as a catalyst for a revelation that turns the lives of both women and their loved ones upside down.
