Irene Kangasniemi and Riitta Ahmasalo - Art exhhibition in Visitor Centre Kellokas

The reindeer has given life to the North. It has given us food, means of transportation, warm clothing, shelter, tools, utensils, even jewelry. Life has also meant the inevitability of death. Nature’s gift of life has always been so valuable that it could not be wasted.
Change has reached the North and the reindeer, too. One must adapt but still cherish one’s own culture. Humans cannot control the cycle of
nature, but rather, they may become a part of it.
Irene Kangasniemi, a seasoned master of crafts, gives voice to the
reindeer, showing us the many purposes it lends itself to. The works are made out of leftover crafting materials, as nothing in nature is waste. The reindeer in Riitta Ahmasalo’s poems is the narrator with whom Kangasniemi had an inspiring dialogue when creating her works.
The ancestors and culture of the Lappish village of Kuolajärvi live on in the works of Kangasniemi. The winter dress of the Kuolajärvi woman pays homage to the Forest Sámi cultural heritage of the Kuolajärvi area, encouraging the viewer to nurture it.
Humans cannot control the nature’s cycle, but they may become a part of it. Then, all the seven senses may open for them, the same way they do with the reindeer or Aikia Aikianpoika.
