Reindeer safaris
Ylläs is a place with long reindeer herding traditions. You can see reindeer walking next to the roads and even on the main road of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi villages. The new reindeer babies are born in May. September is the time to see the reindeer at their best, when the horns have grown to their largest size. During early winter after mating time, the horns fall off, just to grow back again the next year.
You can go on a traditional reindeer sleigh ride or even visit a traditional reindeer herder with the programme providers in Ylläs.
