Huskies and reindeer
Riding a dog sled is a fun and speedy way of spending time outdoors in the nature. It is also a fantastic experience in itself to get to know a husky farm and its dogs.
The sled dogs, which are used to the arctic outdoors, are doing what they most love to do - going out on a mushing trip and usually making a lot of noise before they get going. Riding through a silent, snowy route makes them concentrate on their work and the experience is very memorable.
There are plenty of different kinds of safaris to choose from, depending whether you want to enjoy a shorter trip just sitting on the sledge or whether you want to try driving the three to six dog sledge by yourself. The length of the safaris vary from a few kilometres or even up to several days of adventure.
Reindeer Rides and Trips to Reindeer Farms
Reindeer farming is still a popular, traditional way of living in the Ylläs region. You can see reindeer on the roads and also in the villages. In Ylläsjärvi village there is a ski café called Aurinkotupa and in Äkäslompolo village a reindeer corral just next to the supermarket ”Jounin Kauppa”, where you are able to see reindeer close up.
A traditional reindeer ride and a visit to a reindeer farm can be organised as an activity with several companies in the Ylläs region. You can experience how it was in old Lapland times and hear interesting stories of the times before snowmobiles whilst taking part in a reindeer sledge ride.
Take a look at the safari tour operators on the company websites.
Hunting Tours will be customized according to customer wishes either Kolari municipality's territory or to the Swedish side of the border.
Sitting in a reindeer pulling sleigh is relaxing in the snowy forest.
Snow Fun Safaris
We take you to enjoy the nature by snowmobiles, husky sledges or snow shoes as well as aquaint to the life of reindeer herders. Above all, to gain wonderful holiday memories.
Snow Fun Safaris arrange fun tours by snowmobile for small groups. But that is not all, because we also want our guests to learn something about Lapland, its magnificent scenery, and the lives of the people of Ylläs past and present. In addition to showing you the snowy forests and the mighty fells we therefore try to introduce you to places important to the Sámis and Finns in days gone by, and to bring them alive through the stories told by the guide. We are, furthermore, deeply concerned for your physical well-being and to this end lay on a picnic menu second to none.
We will start the tour by choosing the ski equipment from Äkäslompolo Sportshop. The teacher will first show the basic techniques of cross-country skiing and then we practice on a flat place. When it is going on well enough we head for a short trip to the maintained skiing tracks.
The first Finns are known to have come to Äkäslompolo to fish. Hundreds of years ago the lake was already providing whitefish and trout for the local peasants in winter. In the olden days people fished to keep hunger from the door, but nowadays it is the thrill of the catch that motivates people to get out on the ice.
Rainbow trout can also be caught in addition to the indigenous species in the lakes supervised by the Finnish Forest and Park Service. Enough perch to make a fish soup can be caught in any lake, but the crafty fisherman can, if lucky, hope to land quite a sizeable whitefish.
We can arrange trips by snowmobile or by walking.
Lapland is known for its nature: weather worn rock covered fells, tree – covered hills gleaming in the horizon, wild water passages, primal forests, reindeer herds grazing on the open fell slopes, salmons and trout in the rivers, the clean berries of the fell slopes.
During the Lapland tradition trips we acquaint our guests to the nature and the tradition of Lapland inhabitants, how they have lived and traveled throughout the years, what have been their hobbies and beliefs. Getting acquainted with all this means also getting a chance to return back in time by participating in some old activities, not just listening to the trip guide.
Husky Safaris 9-40 km, Reindeer safaris 4 km.
We can go to farms by snowmobile or by car.
The scenery and the wonders of the Varkaankuru gorge are, however, well worth the effort, whether the trek is made in dazzling sunshine or an arctic blizzard, by day or by night. The guide's familiarity with the terrain, its flora and fauna is the difference between an ordinary safari and a Snow Fun Safari.
Snowshoes also for rental.
